Developing Area of Focus
I am currently working at the Burmese American Community Institute (BACI), where I am actively involved in supporting my community’s health and wellness. This role closely aligns with my academic studies in Public Health and my Certificate in Nutrition, allowing me to apply what I have learned in a real-world setting.
Through my work at BACI, I provide health education to community members by raising awareness about important health topics and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. I focus on helping individuals understand how to maintain their well-being through proper nutrition, preventive care, and informed decision-making. I also guide community members on how to adopt healthier eating habits by sharing practical strategies, culturally relevant advice, and accessible resources.
In addition, I work to reduce barriers to health information by communicating in ways that are understandable and relevant to the community. This experience has strengthened my skills in health communication, cultural competence, and community engagement. It has also deepened my passion for addressing health disparities and improving access to health education among underserved populations. Overall, my work at BACI has been a valuable opportunity to bridge my academic knowledge with meaningful community impact, further preparing me for a career in public health.

Senior Fall Prevention
Senior Fall Prevention: Burmese/Chin Community
This experience strengthened my commitment to community health and showed me the importance of prevention-focused education, especially for older adults. It helped me understand how culturally tailored communication and community-based programs can improve health outcomes and increase trust in healthcare services.
Moving forward, I want to continue gaining experience in public health outreach and develop my skills in health education, translation, and program support. This experience has encouraged me to pursue more opportunities working directly with underserved communities and strengthening my role in health promotion.

Cooking Matter
Cooking Matter: Partnership with Franciscan Health
I was able to participated in a Cooking Matters program for adults in partnership with Franciscan Health, where we focused on improving nutrition knowledge and promoting healthier eating habits. As someone currently pursuing a Certificate in Nutrition, this experience directly connects to my academic training and allowed me to apply what I am learning in a real-world setting. During the sessions, participants learned how to make informed food choices, understand basic nutrition concepts, and apply them in their daily lives. One of the highlights was a hands-on demonstration where we learned how to prepare simple, nutritious recipes, including making smoothies as an easy and affordable healthy option.
This experience showed me how interactive and practical approaches can make nutrition education more effective and engaging, especially for adults who may be managing busy schedules or limited resources. It also gave me the opportunity to see how partnerships between community organizations and healthcare providers can improve access to important health information. Overall, this experience strengthened my passion for nutrition education and encouraged me to continue supporting my community in building healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

Community Baby Shower
Community Baby Shower: Expecting Mothers
I was able to participated the Community Baby Shower event in partnership with Franciscan Health, which focused on supporting pregnant women through education and community resources. The program provided important information on prenatal care, maternal nutrition, infant health, and safe practices during pregnancy. It created a supportive space where expecting mothers could learn, ask questions, and connect with both healthcare professionals and other women in similar stages of life.
During the event, I took on several roles, including setting up and organizing breakfast, helping with decorations to create a welcoming environment, and most importantly, assisting with translation. Providing translation was especially meaningful because it ensured that language was not a barrier to understanding critical health information. It allowed participants to feel more comfortable, included, and confident in the knowledge they were receiving.
Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the importance of culturally responsive care and early health education in improving maternal and infant outcomes. It also strengthened my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, while reinforcing my passion for working in maternal and child health. Being part of this event showed me how community-based programs and strong partnerships can play a vital role in empowering families and promoting long-term health and well-being.
